Personalised Christmas Gifts for People Who Swear They Want Nothing

Personalised Christmas gifts from Wild Mongoo: a Nana name mug, King of the Grill apron and Sister tumbler
CHRISTMAS, STARTED EARLY

"I don't want anything for Christmas."

Six words. Said every year. By the same people.

And every year, you believe them for about four minutes.

Then it is 23 December, you are in a shopping centre queue, and you are holding a candle called "Winter Spice". It is 34 degrees outside.

So let's sort it out now. In October. While you are still calm and the parking is still free.

Here are our personalised Christmas gifts for the people in your life who swear, hand on heart, that they want nothing. All of them are made by hand in our George workshop, and most of them cost less than the year-end function's bar tab.

"Nothing" Is Never Actually Nothing

Here's the thing.

When somebody says they want nothing, they almost never mean nothing.

They mean "please don't spend money on me".
They mean "I already have too much stuff".
They mean "please, not another candle".

Fair. All very fair.

So here's our very scientific Wild Mongoo test for the person who wants nothing:

Will they use it every single day?
YES: wrap it.
NO: step away from the candle aisle.

Something small and useful, with their name on it, does not feel like more stuff. It feels like you were paying attention.

For Gogo, Who Already Has "Everything, My Angel"

Let's call her Nana Rose.

Nana Rose is 81. She has two cats, a cupboard full of 40 years of Christmas presents, and very strong opinions about the neighbour's hedge.

Ask her what she wants and she will say, "Just come and visit, my angel."

Lovely. Do that too.

But Nana Rose also drinks four cups of rooibos before lunch. Every single one comes out of a chipped mug from a petrol station promotion in 1997.

She deserves better than that mug. Quite frankly, so does the rooibos.

A Nana Personalised Mug with NANA in happy flowers and every grandchild's name underneath

Nana Personalised Mug

R99

NANA in big happy flowers, with every grandchild's name printed underneath. She will tell her friends it is "nothing". She will show it to all of them anyway. Cheap? Yes. Used before 7am every single day? Also yes.

Add the grandkids

A little tip from us: list the grandchildren in order of age. Not in order of favourite. Nobody needs that conversation over Christmas lunch.

Shopping for a mother instead? The Mama Personalised Mug (R99) carries all the children's names, so she finally has written proof that she raised every one of you.

For Dad, Who Says "Don't Waste Your Money"

Dad has said "don't waste your money" every Christmas since 1989.

Dad also owns exactly one braai apron. It came free with something in 2008. It has a hole in it shaped a bit like Africa.

On the 25th, Dad will be at the braai from 11am. He will not leave the braai. Nobody else will be allowed near the braai. Somebody will ask "is it ready yet?" fourteen times.

The man needs to look the part.

King of the Grill Apron

It says exactly what he has been telling everyone for 30 years, now in writing. He will say you shouldn't have. He will wear it to every braai until 2031.

Crown the braai king

Is your dad more of a cold-drink-end-of-the-braai man? The Best Dad Bottle Opener (R75) is small enough to count as "nothing". Which is, technically, exactly what he asked for.

For Your Sister, Who Says "Honestly, Nothing"

Let's call her Thandi.

Thandi says "honestly, nothing". Then, at 11pm on 19 December, she sends you a link to exactly what she wants. With three heart emojis.

Thandi also carries a drink everywhere. The car. The office. The school run. The beach at Wilderness, where she will lose the lid and blame you.

Wild Mongoo Sister Personalised Tumbler with SIS in leopard print and pink, and two names

Sister Personalised Tumbler

R259

SIS in big letters, both your names on it, and a lid that survives the school run. It is also the one thing in the house nobody else may drink out of. For a sister, that is the whole point.

Add your names

Is she more of a "new year, new me, two litres of water a day" sister? The Personalised Gym Waterbottle (R298) puts her name on the resolution. Whether she actually gets to two litres is between her and the bottle.

For the One Who Truly, Genuinely Wants Nothing

Every family has one.

Uncle Boetie. Says nothing. Wants nothing. Has wanted nothing since 1974.

For Boetie, there is the Wild Mongoo Gift Card. He gets to choose. You get to stop guessing. And nobody has to fake a smile over a candle.

Please Don't Leave It Until the 23rd

This is the bit we say with love.

Personalised Christmas gifts are not sitting on a shelf in a warehouse somewhere. Once your order comes in, one of our women makes it by hand, especially for you. Then a very patient courier carries it from George to wherever you happen to be.

And December is our busiest month of the year. Everybody remembers Gogo at the same time.

October? Lovely.
Early November? Great.
22 December? You may be wrapping a printed photo of her mug, with a very sincere apology inside.

One small thing: a personalised piece is made for one person only, so it can't be returned or resold. Is it Thandi or Thandie? Renée or Renee? Check it twice. Santa does.

Your Christmas Questions, Answered

When should I order personalised Christmas gifts?

As early as you can. Every piece is made by hand in George and then couriered to you, and December is our busiest month, so ordering in October or early November gives your gift the best chance of arriving with time to spare.

Can I return a personalised gift?

Because a personalised piece is made for one person, it generally can't be returned or resold. Check the name, the spelling and the capitals before you order, and type it exactly as you want us to make it.

What do I buy someone who really does want nothing?

Something they will use every day, with their name on it. A mug, a tumbler or a water bottle works for almost everyone. And for the truly impossible, a Wild Mongoo Gift Card lets them choose for themselves.

Where are Wild Mongoo gifts made?

In our workshop in George, in the Western Cape. Every piece is made by the women of Wild Mongoo.

And Now for the Something

Here's the really good bit.

Every mug, apron and tumbler on this page is made in our George workshop by women who are earning, learning and building a future of their own.

100% of our proceeds go straight back into empowering women. Into jobs, skills, training and opportunities.

So yes, you might be buying Nana Rose a mug. Or Dad an apron. Or Thandi a tumbler she will absolutely lose the lid of.

They asked for nothing.

But for the woman who made it, it is something to be very proud of.

Not bad for "nothing", hey?
