Let us start with the difficult part.
Your dog does not want a present.
Your dog wants your sandwich. Your dog wants the warm patch of sun by the door, a slightly illegal corner of the bed, and one truly unspeakable thing to roll in on Tuesday's walk.
The person who loves that dog, though. Completely different story.
Which is why the best dog mom gifts are almost never for the dog.
We make a LOT of this in our little corner of George. Mugs. Tumblers. Sweatshirts that say things nobody asked to have explained. Bandannas for dogs who have no idea they are wearing anything at all.
So we have learnt exactly who these gifts are actually for.
Here is our guide to buying for a dog person. And you know precisely which dog person is yours.
She Told You She Was a Dog Mom Within Four Minutes
You did not have to ask.
It came up somewhere between hello and the weather. Then came the photographs. Then the dog's full name, its nickname, its second nickname, and its very strong feelings about thunder.
This is a person who WANTS the t-shirt. She has been quietly waiting for somebody to buy her the t-shirt.
Here is our very scientific Wild Mongoo test for this section:
Would she still tell a complete stranger about her dog while holding it?Yes. The answer is always yes. Buy it.
One warning, and then we will move along.
There is a real difference between a gift she wears and a gift she keeps in a drawer because you clearly meant well. If it is only funny for about four seconds, that is a drawer gift. If she would put it on to go and fetch milk, that is the one.
The Dog Dad Who Said Absolutely Not to Getting a Dog
He said no.
He was not doing walks. He was not doing vet bills. And the dog was categorically, under no circumstances, sleeping inside the house.
The dog now sleeps on his side of the bed. He takes it to the shop for company. He has developed a special voice that he speaks to it in, and he does not know we can all hear him.
He will never ask for any of this. Buy it for him anyway.
The one he will actually use
Best Dog Dad Ever Mug
Every single morning, before he speaks to another human being, he is holding a mug. It may as well be this one. Cheap enough to be an easy yes, used often enough to be a bit of a statement.
R99
Get the mugAnd if he is more of a t-shirt man, we have thoughts on that too.
Sometimes You Need the Actual Face
A name is lovely.
But a name cannot capture the ears. Or the specific expression it pulls at five in the morning when it has decided, on your behalf, that the day is beginning now.
For that, you need the photograph.

You can have both, of course. The photo and the name, on the same tumbler, so there is no doubt whatsoever whose dog Bailey is.
And the treat jars go the other way entirely. Those get the name on a little tag hanging off the side, so that Ginger's biscuits and Charlie's biscuits stop being a daily negotiation.
One tip from the workshop, learnt the hard way: send us a clear, well-lit photo of one animal. Three dogs, a braai, and half an uncle in the background is a big ask for a coffee mug.
Fine. Something for the Actual Dog.
We did say the dog does not want a present. We stand by it.
The dog will not thank you. The dog will not notice. The dog will wear it with the quiet dignity of an animal who has no idea anything has happened.
It will, however, look absolutely outstanding, and you will take sixty photographs, and let us be honest with each other about who that was really for.

Bandannas, collars, leads, beds, bowls and treat jars all live together in one place, and you can add your pet's name to any of the bandannas for R25.
And for the Cat People, Who Have Been Extremely Patient
We see you. Arms folded. Eyes narrowed. Cat sitting on the keyboard, contributing.
You have scrolled past an entire article about dogs, which is the most cat-owner thing imaginable, and you deserve something for it.
One Last Name, and Then We Will Leave You Alone
Every mug, tumbler, tee and bandanna on this page was made by a woman in our workshop in George.
She is learning a trade, earning her own money and building something that belongs to her. Her name goes on the card that comes in the box with your order. 100% of Wild Mongoo's proceeds go straight back into that work.
So you thought you were buying something for the dog.
Then it turned out to be for the human.
It was quietly for her too. 💗
